The
Tauá Nature Reserve
 This
wetland reserve covers an area of 3 million
square metres. It is dense with grassland
and ancient primary forest. Here also, is
the only fresh water lake in the area, providing
water for migrating flocks of birds.
The reserve is a natural breeding ground,
with 300 species of butterflies, 83 bird species,
wild orchids, Brazil wood and 40% of the 3,000
species of bromelia found in Brazil. The duneland
bush vegetation, an endangered ecosystem,
flourishes and reproduces freely here. Remnants
of indigenous cultures are also in evidence,
such as the ancient Sambaqui indian cemetery,
and an early flour mill.
One can also see an emerged fossil beach,
which 7,000 years ago was on the sea floor.
The beach contains an interesting variety
of shells and oysters.
The Tauá Reserve is found close to
the Búzios/Cabo Frio municipal boundary.
